For more than 50 years, Southern Cross Care has been providing quality aged care and retirement living services to our community. We're guided by our compassionate, capable, collaborative and creative values, and we want people who share these values to join our team.
About the role
As a Buddy Support Worker you will assist in improving clients connection to the wider community, promote their independence and support engagement in activities that are meaningful to our clients, including learning new skills.
This role involves spending one to one quality time with clients each week. Your caseload of clients will be diverse; clients may be living with dementia or another health related issue or they may be experiencing social isolation. During each Buddy visit you will ‘create your own adventure’ with your client, and provide companionship. Some examples of a buddy service could involve you supporting a client who likes to be active to attend an exercise group or have a game of mini golf; going for walks in nature with a client who loves the outdoors or; in the home participate in games and activities with a client who loves to challenge their brain; or maybe you could teach each other a new skill…the possibilities are endless and no day will be the same!
For further details regarding the scope of the role, please refer to the attached position description.
You will thrive in this role if you have a natural ability to; build meaningful relationships and have the personality that can put a smile on the faces of those around you. You will be knowledgeable and passionate about person-centred care for older adults and are motivated to promote our clients independence to remain living at home for as long as possible. You will have the ability to seek creative solutions to overcome barriers to client participation in meaningful activities and in order to help reach their wellbeing goals.
The hours of this role can be well suited to a person who has commitments with school drop off/pick up.
You will be equally comfortable with working autonomously while also being an active member of the greater Community Respite team, displaying initiative, integrity, creativity in continuous improvement projects and a strong work ethic.
With a Senior First Aid Certificate and a Certificate III or IV in a relevant field (Aged Care, Home and Community Care, Individual Support) you will have a current driver's licence and your own vehicle. You will also have relevant experience working with older people and clients living with dementia in a similar role.
